Panvel-Vasai Suburban Rail Corridor: ₹12,710 Crore Proposal Sent to Centre
A Rs 12,710 crore proposal has been submitted for the 69.23-km Panvel-Vasai suburban railway corridor under MUTP-3B. Find out the planned stations, elevated tracks and approval process.
Currently, passengers travelling from Panvel to the Vasai-Virar region do not have access to a direct suburban local train service. As a result, commuters have to change trains at Kurla, Dadar or other stations to reach their destinations. This increases both travel time and the effort required for daily journeys.
The proposed Panvel-Vasai railway corridor aims to establish direct rail connectivity between Mumbai's eastern and western suburbs. It could provide relief to thousands of residents who travel daily for work, business and education. However, the project is still at the proposal stage, and the introduction of actual local train services will require government approval and further project-related work.
The proposed corridor will cover a total distance of 69.23 km, with an estimated cost of Rs 12,710 crore and 82 lakh. The plan includes 17 stations, while approximately 28 km of the railway track is proposed to be elevated. The corridor will be developed under the Mumbai Urban Transport Project (MUTP-3B).
Considering highways, creeks and other geographical obstacles along the route, approximately 28 km of railway line is planned to be constructed on elevated sections. This arrangement is intended to facilitate the planned development of the railway track while addressing the geographical challenges along the corridor.
The next major step for the project is approval from the Central Government. The Maharashtra Government's Infrastructure Committee had already approved the project. Following this, a proposal seeking Rs 12,710 crore and 82 lakh has been submitted to the Centre.
The project's further progress and the commencement of actual construction will depend on the necessary administrative and financial approvals from the Central Government and the Ministry of Railways. Once the required clearances are secured, the proposed corridor could move closer to providing direct suburban rail connectivity between Panvel and Vasai, addressing a long-standing connectivity gap for commuters across the Mumbai Metropolitan Region.
